Case Torre Marino
Lovely holiday bungalows surrounded by a beautiful garden close to the beach. Case Torre Marino: 4 well-kept ground-level flats beautifully situated in nature near Santa Domenica di Ricadi; only 5 minutes walk to the beach.
Case Torre Marino is located 5 minutes by car south of Santa Domenica di Ricadi, about 3 km from Tropea on the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria. Santa Domenica is a quiet little village where you can do your shopping. Especially the small bakery, somewhat hidden on the Corso, offers delicious freshly baked bread, small mini pizzas and ciabatta with olives in the morning. Centrally located is the well-stocked supermarket and opposite it, in a small shop, you will find a good selection of wines as well as the local specialities, `nduja (spicy sausage paste), cheeses, etc. In the two pasticcerias and in the bar Mascalzone you can drink your cappuccino in the morning or enjoy an aperitif in the evening or eat homemade ice cream. On Mondays there is a weekly market in Santa Domenica, where you can buy fresh vegetables, fruit, cheese and sausage, but also clothes, household goods and flowers. There is also a small post office, a pharmacy, a bank and a petrol station in the village, as well as a selection of restaurants. There is also a railway station in Santa Domenica. The small regional train costs next to nothing and takes you from Lamezia Terme to Rosarno and stops in all the pretty coastal towns such as Pizzo, Nicotera, Parghelia, Zambrone, etc.
The beaches and bays between Santa Domenica and Capo Vaticano are among the most beautiful in Calabria. By car, numerous other beautiful bays can be reached in just a few minutes from your holiday home.
You have the most beautiful view of the sea and the sunset behind the Lipari Islands directly opposite the holiday home property. Torre Marino was originally part of a Saracen fortification. From the tower (Torre), the tower guard could spot enemy attackers from the sea at an early stage and give warning signals. Today the place with the old tower is picturesque, as if time had stood still. You are high above the sea and from here you can enjoy the most beautiful sunsets and, if visibility is good, watch the regular eruptions on the volcanic island of Stromboli.
Only 3 km away is the old noble town of Tropea, enthroned like an acropolis on the sandstone cliff that slopes steeply down to the sea. Wonderful beaches stretch along several bays. The old town of Tropea is criss-crossed by small, narrow alleyways where the noisy and typical southern Italian life takes place. Numerous shops invite you to stroll and shop and a large selection of restaurants offer you the specialities of the region. Of particular historical interest are Tropea’s Norman cathedral and the numerous noble palaces in the old town with their beautiful entrance portals. Tropea’s landmark, the small rocky island “Isola Bella” (Beautiful Island) with its pretty chapel can be admired from one of Tropea’s panoramic terraces. A climb up to the chapel is definitely worthwhile. The chapel has been recently restored and there is a small garden behind it. Sea, sun and horizon seem to unite here.
The 4 adjoining bungalow flats, located in Borgo Torre Marino, a small village square with rustic houses and a small church, are situated above one of the most beautiful bathing bays near Santa Domenica di Ricadi. The flats are perfect for a beach holiday or as a starting point for excursions along the Tyrrhenian coast and the green hinterland.
All four flats have a large kitchen and dining area and two bedrooms, one with a double bed, the other with two single beds that can be made into a double bed on request, and a bathroom with shower. Each flat has an outdoor area with patio furniture. The large garden can be shared by all guests, sun loungers and a barbecue are at your disposal. Under the trees you have plenty of shady spots to relax or take a siesta. There are several handy outdoor showers in the garden, wonderful after a long day at the beach or as a refreshing cool down in between.
Your host is Gioacchino, a very friendly Calabrian who lovingly looks after and maintains the flats and the property. Everything is in very good shape and is regularly renewed, which is indispensable due to the proximity to the sea. Unfortunately, wind and salt water cause damage every year during the winter months. So it is all the more gratifying to find someone who obviously takes the annual maintenance seriously and spares no effort.
